For straight line racing with the terriers the line is free and kept ahead of the dogs.
The very first set I saw was a bicycle turned upside down and powered by man.
The modern ones are as Vickie said. A Ford Starter motor, a ford solenoid and a Marine battery. Pullys are attached to the starter motor shaft.
You need to build some sort of break to keep the line from getting ahead of itself and wrapping up on the wheel. I tried breaking one with my hunting boots and it cut right through the sole of the boot. Dern expensive boots too.
This shows a lure setup. Very simple. http://www.therealjackrussell.com/trial/racing.php
To make this a multi turn lure course you need spools for the corners and and a continuous line.
ha ha, just re-read my post- WHIPPETS, not whoppers.
My ford lure machine had a metal rod that bolted to the top of the machine with an eyebolt the line fed through, to keep it feeding straight. But you really needed a pulley to offset the machine so the fast dogs didn't run into the machine (it "'coasts" a bit after you let off the button). The line will give you some awful line burns if a dog grabs the lure and runs off with it and the line gets against your leg, and at speed it can cut through achilles tendons on dogs like butter (with continuous loop). You really need a person dedicated to paying attention and running the lure, and someone else to handle the dog.
one advantage to the little suitcase style ones is that they don't have a lot of pull- they cannot pull a heavy lure, and if a dog gets tangled in the line it will simply not pull the lure. So they are ideal for a one person operation- with a remote button you can release your dog and run the lure.
