Becky - it's so amazing to watch people in the city and state come together and work together there. I live in OKC for a couple years and still have friends and family there - my brother lives about a mile from where the tornado was in Edmond on Sunday (he's fine). I'm seeing posts on FB on how they are networking to volunteer where and how they can.
It's heartbreaking hearing about the lives that were lost. But it is truly amazing seeing the devastation and realizing how many people SURVIVED it. You guys are tough, responsible and very well prepared.
On another board that I am on, people are ranting about lack of shelters at the school(s). This particular board is largely populated with people that have distincty liberal/Dem leanings.
It's not just liberals wondering about that. Concrete and rebar isn't that expensive. They already huddle everybody in an interior hallway. How hard would it be to reinforce the walls, roof, and doors in that area? At home people have "storm closets", a reinforced bathroom, or a basement. Why shouldn't the school have something?
I have no idea what the cost or upheaval to implement storm reinforcements would be but it seems like it should at least be looked into.

Schools there are built with tornadoes in mind and are already constructed with concrete and rebar - they are already just as safe or safer than homes. Moving to interior spaces (hallways, closets and bathrooms) provides additional protection from flying debris and wind suck.
