So sorry you are going through this Amy. Unfortunately horses rarely go to the Bridge "peacefully" and it is difficult to watch for an adult.
I was 8 when I lost my first dog, and at that time my grandfather taught me about the Bridge and St Francis- a talk I remember to this day. Loss is a hard lesson to learn.
I hope Chloe will have lots of wonderful memories to draw on.
Buddy will join many wonderful souls - my Red and Dancer included. He will be waiting for Chloe at the Bridge.
Hugs to you all.

Yes Kelly, you are right. In fact, I find so disturbing that not even I will be there. Thank God for my husband who has sadly been the last hands on lead ropes since he was 9. Even with the cancer, I don't know if I could have made this decision if his body score hadn't deteriorated so quickly.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It has helped ease my doubts about how we are handling it with her. Yesterday we brushed and treated and petted and spoiled. Chloe hung out on his back as he wandered around grazing and he loved every minute. He still lives for his girl- nearly lifting her off the ground As he pushed his nose into his halter so they could head into the arena. Leaving was heartbreaking as he kept gently placing himself between Chloe and the gate, putting his nose in her hair. He's never done that before.
Tomorrow he will be burried in his favorite pasture at the edge of our building site. We will clip some of his beautiful white mane and have it sent to be made into a bracelet for my little girl. This is one of the hardest weeks I have had as a parent and I know its going to be an awfully sad weekend at our house. Thanks again for all your thoughts.
Amy, this is a version of Rainbow Bridge that refers to all animals (many are dog-specific):
http://www.petloss.com/rainbowbridge.htm
Here it is about horses:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When a horse dies who has been especially close to someone here, that horse goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the horses who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The horses are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to race away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your horse, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
I don't know if your child knows anything about human mortality yet, and this does speak to the owner's own future death, so not sure if it's right, but here it is anyway, just in case.

Amy, it's easy to second guess these things, but making the decision now, and not when it's -20 degrees and he goes down on the ice is much better for all of you- even Buddy. I played that game with Red, and I lost- he was down on the ice seizing for 4 hours before the vet came out... it just made a truamatic experience that much worse.
The thing I do when I lose a horse, is I snip a handful of the mane and I keep it with other keepsakes like their papers, ribbons, and halters.... (I "retire" their tack too, how weird am I??)

Thanks Connie! I will think about what version to use. Chloe is aware of mortality and is quite frightened by it. I'm wondering if knowing she will see Buddy again will ease that a bit.

I hope you and Chloe are doing OK, Amy. Death is one of the most difficult life lessons but it is nothing to fear. It is merely a passage from life on earth with all it's joy and heartaches, to eternal life in heaven.
Tell Chloe not to worry, Buddy is safe and happy and she'll see him again someday.

Lots of tears today. Saturday the vet had an emergency and wasn't able to make it out so we rescheduled for today. Late last night Buddy laid down in the hay and quietly passed away on his own terms. We found him this morning. There were no signs of struggle like he had tried to get back up, he just laid his head down and closed his eyes. I think God had a plan for him to do so. Thanks to all for your support. I appreciate every single one of you!

I'm so sorry, but so happy about a peaceful passing.
