Breeding can be a heart breaker, there is no two ways about it. Do I make money on a litter? Absolutely, as long as I don't pay myself 1/2 minimum wage for every hour spent. Prob not even 1/10th. LOL But to me that's not work and I don't really count it.
The dogs in shelters do cause a conflict for me. When a dog that I placed in a carefully screened home ends up somewhere I do not like, it breaks my heart.
You can have all the rights of first refusal you want, you can take back as many dogs as need be. But sooner or later someone you trusted is going to be less then desirable. And who pays? The dog. As always.
I have a 3 week old male from Cori's litter here now who if he continues to show the behavior he is exhibiting is going to have to be carefully carefully placed. He will not be for the unprepared. And where do you place him? There are very few people ready for that kind of a dog, regardless of what they state.
Regardless of what their dog resume claims.
I suspect he will be with me for a while.
Breeding is rewarding. I enjoy watching my generations build upon one another and I love the emails I get from people telling me how happy they are with one of my dogs.
But when one, just one, of my dogs end up in a less then ideal placement I have to wonder.
And the post above me by Betty is why many people that I know consider her one of the most ethical breeders that they know - I'm proud to have her as a friend!

DITTO!!!
Betty, you agonize over your placements, like a good breeder should. You also actively try to rescue dogs that others don't even give a second glance to. Those dogs, too, break your heart when they slip away.
THAT is what makes you an ethical breeder, and a great person. You have my utmost respect.
Good luck with your little boy- I know you will find the perfect home for him.
