I'm currently trying chlorpheniramine as benedryl seemed pretty worthless. I'll look into those other ones you mentioned, Tracy. And the Quercetin too, Lori. Right now I'm pretty much fact finding so if/when we head to the vet, I'll have good questions to ask. I'd really like to avoid prednisone at this point but I'm afraid all the scratching could be enough to cause sores/hot spots so if something doesn't work soon I think we might have to do a round of that

I've been using chlorpheniramine for Ambi's allergies with much success, one thing to remember is that the half life of it is fairly short and you may need to dose every 4 hours(check with your vet of course) Ambi is now just getting 1tab in the morn, with vit e and her allergies have been well controlled since spring. Good luck.

There must be something in the air this time of year. My 17 month old GSD has the same itchiness going on. We live in SE Michigan, but train on the west side of the state.
This year I've noticed a mold like substance on the grass and leaves some of the time. I wear white cleats during Schutzhund training since I do some helper work. After training it looks like I have orange dust all over my shoes.
He was licking his feet, scrotum and anus/base of tail so frequently that he developed a bacterial infection. He's on Benadryl and Cephalexin right now, as well as some ear drops since his right ear became gunky. I have also been bathing him occasionally as well as soaking his feet in KetaChlor shampoo. The combination seems to be working well, since he is showing much improvement and has pretty much stopped itching for the last few days now.

Just an update - right now the chlorpheniramine seems to be really helping. Itching is still there but has decreased signifficantly. For instance she can sleep through the night without waking up and scratching several different times. I'm still gradually upping the fish oil too. I'm also switching her back over to THK/raw from TOTW since my late Border Collie always seemed to have the least issues with allergies when on a minimally processed diet.

You might want to start a simple journal, too. If it's airborne allergens (and that would be number two in likelihood, after fleas), you may well see a pattern.
In my atopic dog's worst seasons, I keep the doors and windows closed at sunup and sundown. Only the journal told me this ... I never would have made the connection on my own between the breeze that springs up at sunup and sundown as close as we are to the ocean and my dog's worst times of day during the pollen season that features his worst allergens.

Lee, the base of the tail is classic flea territory. So is ear infection for a dog with FAD (flea allergy dermatitis, AKA flea saliva dermatitis and flea hypersensitivity). So is skin staph.
I'm very glad it seems to be better, but I want to say that you should start a thread if the relief doesn't last. Not seeing fleas is NOT proof against fleas, and neither is not being bitten yourself.

The journal sounds like something I should be doing. One of these days I'm gonna break down and get a smart phone so I keep track of dog health, training, etc all in one place...

Thanks Connie! It's actually the underside of his tail, right where it connects to his butt. He wasn't itching the topside base, near where his back ends. I used to live in Houston and there was a terrible flea problem there. My dog at the time had chewed all of the fur off of the base of her tail/back area, so I'm familiar with how nasty those critters can be.
I will keep the FAD in mind though and discuss it with my vet if he has another flare up. Right now he's doing great and I have taken him off of the Benadryl. He gets the Cephalexin for another 10 days or so, and the drops they gave him have cleared up his ear.
Thank you!

Oh, you're absolutely right, Lee ... I misunderstood.
I know you'll keep looking in the ears regularly (with a flashlight) .... and I'm so glad that things are better!
