Speaking of yogurt. For those that feed it (and are DIY inclined, like me)-- it is ridiculously easy to make your own cultured yogurt, for about 1/4 the cost of store-bought. And you don't need any special equipment, except a cooking thermometer.
Easy to google how to. Or I'm happy to share.
This came as an a-ha to me several months back when I realized I was spending a fortune buying yogurt and kiefer for my mob of dogs. It really is falling-off-a-log easy to make yogurt.
Tracy, I wish you would share. I really need to start doing this.
I should have clarified in my post that I don't feed digestive enzymes... the only thing digestion related I supplement is the yogurt for the probiotics.
As long as you are feeding a balanced, healthy raw diet that includes a good variety, you shouldn't need to supplement digestive enzymes unless there is a medical reason to do so.
I have only used digestive enzymes for a dog who had chronic G.I tract problems. B-Naturals has a great digestion supplement, aptly named "digestion blend".
I will use probiotics if my dog gets an upset stomach or has diarrhea...seems to straighten things out quickly. Otherwise, I generally only supplement with these when my dog is on antibiotics.
Other then a dog with a medical issue....I would only feed digestive enzymes as a supplement to a dog that is switching from kibble to a raw diet to help ease the dog's digestive track to be better able to absorb the nutrients from it's new diet.
All my dogs were weaned onto raw from their raw fed dams...but have helped other introduce raw diets to their dogs & have found that the enzymes have been helpful for the first few weeks to a month during the change over to raw. Others may have different results.
I feed a homemade raw diet (& have for over 10 years) & add a high quality live cultured plain non sweetened greek yogurt daily with their morning meal.
Going to look into Tracy's idea of making my own yogurt now, too.
Thanks for all the info - I do use fish oil and vitamin e for supplements, along with some other herbs and stuff for my shepherd since he has lumbar sacral disease. So I will skip the digestive enzymes for now. Bummer about the probiotics and yogurt being the same I didnt even really think about it and I just re-ordered some probios today. The dogs actually like yogurt lots so maybe I'll store the probios away for awhile.
I really like the idea of making your own yogurt too, would definitely help on costs, it can all add up thats for sure.
