Go too How to Breakup a Dog Fight and Not get Hurt. The photo's are towards the end. I sent Ed aphoto of my arm. He said he was going to use it as to WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BREAK UP A DOG FIGHT THE WRONG WAY
"YOU'RE WELCOME!!!" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Seriously, glad you're doing OK. It's just I find some things interesting that others might find "icky".

"ICKY" or not everyone that works around dogs should how to handle this type of INCIDENT" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I thought I did, found out differently. The GSD "OUTED" and I didn't pull away from him.Luckly i could manhandle both at the smae time. A smaller person or my wife this incident could have been a lot worse. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
I meant the pics might be icky....that's all. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Glad you decided to make a learning opportunity out of your mistake. Hopefully your warning has prompted others to read the article. It's amazing how many people instinctively start yelling or getting between the dogs.
OUCH! Hope your doing better Butch, those punture wounds sure are painful, and the best is yet to come! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> (arm should be getting good and stiff by now, and those lovely purply-yellow colors should be blossoming soon!) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
You may also want to do a dose of some oral antibiotics just as a precaution. I was bitten on the leg and I ignored it becaused it wasn't that deep, well it got infected. Needed those antibiotics!
Have fun with your dogs and keep up the training!Good Luck!

hey Butch, glad to hear that you will be ok.I was reading your posts, and when you mentioned that your dogs had settled a pack order a long time ago, I had the thought that this incident was a direct result of you getting a new puppy.
I recall being told that more than 2 dogs can be very hard, and that it will definately cause an upheaval in the social structure of the pack,My take is that you had 2 dominant dogs and the male was reasserting himself to the akita because of the pup. Do you agree?
I hope you don't get rid of the akita, call me soft, but she was there 1st! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
Jeannette, You might be onto something about the GSD asserting himself with the Akita. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
The pup has never had any contact with the Akita and has only run with the male GSD under my supervision. The Akita and pup have never been able to get along. The pup has tried but the Akita is to jealous.
When the fight started the pup was outside in it's kennel as always.
Like you mentioned the GSD was most likely reasserting himself as the dominent dog in the pack.
I think the Akita just got tired of the GSD being overbearing/ always being pushy.
The male GSD is the only dog I've seen her be dominated by. She's not dog aggressive but take's nothing from any other dogs. Most all back away after they show any sign of aggresion. She's a real laid back Akita. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
The Akita isn't going anywhere, we just have to rearrange the setting. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
!!WOW!! Glad to hear your ok Butch. Iv'e broken up a few fights when I was teaching obedience classes. We always kept a large beach towel in a tupperware bowl. It had a solution of water and amonia on it. We would throw the towel over the fighting dogs and it always worked for us. It's not always avaliable when you need it, but in a class room situation it was always handy.
