Thanks, everyone. I am going to share all of this with my friend.
Betty's advice is pretty much what I always thought, and I know some experienced dog people that have the same understanding. That is why I initially thought the vet's statement was off-center or that the mother-in-law had influenced the vet. However, in reading the entirety of the posts here, it seems that the thirst COULD possibly be polydipsia caused by an infection or maybe worse, and I'm thinking that the mother-in-law and her vet are right to want to follow up.
If I had a 9 wk old pup from a good breeder who was showing signs of major organ failure I'd be mighty concerned.
There should not be any PU/PD in a pup of this age. If you are treating PU/PD, real PU/PD at 9 wks, there is a serious problem ------- not a little nothing which will be cured by antibiotics and love.

Betty, why do you say major organ failure? There has not been a diagnosis. They were given antibiotics for the bladder infection, while they wait for the results of the bloodwork and diabetes testing.

I may find out Wed pm.
Personally, I think that it's an infection. Just a coincidence that the pup drinks excessively. No signs of distress. Clear eyes and ears. Normal activity, urination and defecation. Very strong appetite.
None of the littermates have an infection, and no history of congenital ailments in bloodlines.
