The genetically sound dog can be messed up to a point and still become a solid dog.
In herding I've seen "trained" dogs that would fold rather then face off with strong cattle. Those same cattle wouldn't dare do the same to another dog that doesn't back down and the dogs and cattle both will usually have one another sized up with nothing more then a few looks.
Of course then you have cattle that have never been worked by a herding dog or herding dogs that have never worked cattle. Then it's decision time for both and the mentally/genetically strong will survive.

Exactly! I've had a few people tell me "well, just train him." I quite honestly want to punch those people in the throat. It is not that simple.
