I did all these things with Levi but I think I thought the pup would learn more from the older dogs. Instead I have created something else. I have taken the advice to seperate them more. I ams spending time with them seperately. When I first got him I didnt need to tether (I thought) because he was up my backside every stinking minute but he then started getting what I believe someone last night referred to as "doggy" and things started going to hell. I am now once again the center of the universe and thank all of you for bringing me back to all the things I learned before I ever brought Levi home from being on this board. It's what made him such an amazing dog!! Ok, so...yeah Going to get back to the kids
The down side to letting a pup learn from other dog(s)s is there is no way for the owner to control learning just good behaviors and not the bad ones. It also re enforces the "leadership" of the older dog to the pup.
Sounds like your going in the right direction.
There are many here to help keep you on the straight and narrow.
Doggy was my comment. You want your pup to see you & only you as his leader in ALL things.
My exposure of pups to older dogs is a walk with all of us together. Pup on one side older dogs on the other & we WALK. No fooling around or stopping...we march forward. It is pleasant & controlled for all.
Other exposure is at home with the pup crated in the active family area of the house. When the pup is out the older dogs are either crated or in another room. The interaction is very limited with a young puppy. I don't want the risk of an older dog getting annoyed with puppy antics & trying to 'correct' the pup. That's MY job & I take it seriously. Although I really never correct pups...just re-diredt or distract them into a behavior I want. Puppies can be ruined for life & grow up to be dog aggressive when frightened by a attack (real or perceived) by reactive or aggressive adult dog. To me...not worth the risk.
