I agree with you all about using food as a souce of bonding and reward.But, I raised to GSD pups from 2 different bloodlines and very different drives and I did not use food.I had very good recalls off leash with both , a lot of my club members couldn't believe the bond I had with both pups .I spend a lot of time with both of them and we did tons of "run Aways" I had very good off leash control at such a young age with them.I never once used food.So I think it all depends on the dog some just don't respond to food as good as others.For me it was the amount of time I spend with them and some small recall exercises, like run aways, running off in a different direction then where the pups were going (all off leash)After that,they always kept their eyes on me, in case I would run off again.Never once did they ever run from me when I called 'em.As a reward I plainely showed tons of excitements and lots of affection.Just a thought.
