Is it possible to post a link to a little video clip?
If i think of it I will try to capture it on video. I've been using a ball more then food because it's easier & cleaner for me. Yes, that might be wrong of me
The comment in the other thread about the wet, smelly food and the dog knowing it's there.
Once the dog truly understand the concept of a marker meaning a treat then the treat can be anywhere.
When I work my dogs their reward is "usually" a tug. I may have that tug in my pocket. It may be on the ground in plain sight while we heel around it (high level distraction). It may be at the other end of the yard on top the fence.
The dog realizes that ANY mark means a reward WILL be coming unless your in the very early stages of marker training. It doesn't have to be immediate once the dog "gets the idea".
Tanner will gag/cough with the Zuke's as well. In his case he's just trying to eat and breathe at the same time. I find if I hold up everything to give him a sec to eat the treat he'll inhale it less. If we're moving around a lot he still occasionally inhales a treat. I just wait for him to cough it up and give it a second try at going down the right pipe.
Not giving it from above his head seems to reduce the choking a bit. He's a boxer who produces a lot of drool during treat training so that might have something to do with it as well.

If I use HV treats they have to be bigger than I would like, about the size of a nickel, otherwise they get inhaled. MV and LV treats can be small with no issue.
Carlin often does this with small HV treats - Zukes or otherwise. He tries to eat the treat too fast and it goes down the wrong pipe.
I haven't run into this, but looks like it might be common.
What do you use instead, John? Something softer?
Ha, and I thought the gagging was because I had a, yah know, a Poodle.
I have never had this issue with my dogs, fosters, SD's in training, etc.
Clay has done this since he was a young pup. I actually thought he had a form of
Dysphagia.
He does fine with cooked chicken and beef in small pieces.
