Betty, go at "bring the pliers" the same way you look at any retrieve.
You want him to be comfortable with the object so before you toss it get the dog to take them from you hand (reward worthy), hold, reward worthy, carry them, reward worthy and then a clean out. Again, reward worthy.

Load the video into windows live movie maker and edit it down.
I should have the "posting videos" read me done today.
Thank you, David!
Not a major rush ..... folks will need their videos for sure in a couple of weeks, and early practice is good, but still, training can be happening immediately.

Take an envelope and cover it in Duct Tape! Seriously!
I started my trick planning by gathering the kids bath toys that Duke is never allowed to have and ALWAYS trying to filch. If Duct tape works, you can generalize from there (which is what you're working on with the dumbbell, I know)
I sent Connie a blurb of our plier work, will try to get it on here. I can email it, but don't seem to be able to post it.
For the pliers and Maggie your guy with the paper I'm finding that if I reward only better attempts
he will hold the pliers longer and carry them farther. Like he's getting "used" to them.
When I tried to do a more formal, like Bob recommended "take" and "hold" , my guy got bucky, like I was trying to force him, all sort of "Well, if it's going to be like THAT I'm not playing!, I'm not doing it at ALL, keep your grilled chicken!"
I'm sure that's my fault as trainer, also my guy doesn't want me to touch him. Taking the pliers from my hand was starting to be too close for comfort for him.
