Alright, thank you. This sentence is copy and pasted of of the esrd website. Which is the Canadian equivalent to the board of animal health.
"Skunks can carry rabies, although there are very few rabid skunks in Alberta."
That definitely calms down the nerves.
As well as another site states, there has only been one case of rabies in alberta since 2010 which was in a bat.
Will ensure he receives the rabies vaccine later this month. As suggested by Betty i will be very very observant of his behaviour.
Those of us that got serious about hunting with earth dogs would ourselves get rabies shots. You just never know.
I've been head down in a hole looking down a tunnel we had dug and had raccoon, possum and ground hog run up my back in order to get away from the terriers.
It was just a matter of staying still because the critters just wanted to get out of there. If you started swatting at them...well, it could get a bit more exciting then you wanted it to.
The only time it bothered me was a possum decide to stop in the middle of my back and relieve itself.
I think I heard it chuckle on the way up.
Haha, that's a great little story. I got a rabies shot a couple years ago, i got bit by an animal cannot for the life of me remember what it was. Might be a sign i get bit too often lol. I track persons with this dog, as well as starting to get into tracking coyotes and deer. So his rabies shots will be something I'm going to need to stay on top of.
I believe the skunk is dead under my shed in the backyard. Just waiting another day or two for the weather to warm and confirm my suspicion. If so i will have fish and wildlife at my house to get it and test it for extra reassurance. It is pretty far under there however after tossing a few mothballs its way it did not move, nor does it appear to be breathing.
He definitely has two rounds of the distemper vaccine. I have called fish and wildlife multiple times this summer leaving messages about the abundant amount of skunks this year. I have not heard back yet.
Just a quick update. Hydro got his rabies shot today. Vet checked him over and all is well. Apparently they have gotten well over 100 calls this summer about dogs getting sprayed. One of whom passed away from heinz anemia i believe its called.
I've know of a couple of earth dogs that passed away from being skunked. Very rare but still not impossible.
Being sprayed in those tight confines it can create a problem similar to toxic shock syndrome.
The dog may be fine the next day but be gone in another couple of days.
One of my two regular hunting partners was a vet. She said the best thing is to get the dog on a IV asap to keep the kidneys flushed. I "believe" it was ringers solution.
