Peter, a good lab is hard to beat. but they are so doggy, and so big, and the OCD fetching would drive me bonkers, life lived for a gooey tennis ball.
My ACDs would both fetch, but seemed to think it was ridiculous to do it over and over and over again. "I brought the ball, for Gods sake, why do you keep throwing it, if you want it?"
can anyone rationally dispute the Labrador in terms of versatility and proven performance across multiple venues over the longest time in the most countries?
I think the reason labs are so popular is that they're more idiot proof than other working breeds and there are so many types out there that I would argue that they are pretty much equal to different breeds.
But I disagree about the performance across multiple venues. Detection, yes, hunting, yes. Service work, yes - they excel at all of these and are often the best choice (especially for a new handler) All around OB, agility, yes, they are contenders. But when you add in protection sports, competitive agility, herding and sports like freestyle, then other breeds are ahead of them in versatility and being top contenders around the world.
Of course all owners/breeders have different experiences and opinions on their own breed, so am curious if anyone disagrees with the article.
Well, I for one AGREE With It TOTALLY, of course !!!
My own Irish Wolfhounds from the late '70s to early '90s were definitely The GREATEST Ever, and I would have to say, especially my peerless spay Major Acres' Jean Breegh, Field Champion, Lure Courser of Merit, CDX

How did this animal have 6 grandparents?

I surprise myself at my own answer, but I'm coming to think that Pit Bulls (and pit mixes) are way up there as best breed. I love their mix of seriousness and clownish affection. I love their athleticism, intelligence, and how people-focused they are. I love their enthusiasm for life. I love that meaty blocky head. And that short slick coat is an easy keeper.
