Hi Greg,
Thanks for your comments. Fair enough.
To be fair Kasper just wasn't on a PHYSICAL leash.
He was however always under my voice control and if I saw any reason, I would call him to my side and hook him up until it was no longer necessary... as I always carried a leash.
Kasper never met another dog he didn't like!
He never stepped off the curb without my permission.
We were strongly bonded and he was really tuned in to my vibes.
Kasper was free to do whatever he wanted the entire block and would just stop and check his 'pee-mail' at every telephone post. Oblivious to the city rat race because it was just normal to him his whole life.
Once he got to the end of the block he never ever, never, stepped off the curb without a special cue from me.
He was a free, happy spirit forced to be a dog in a city with the second-most density of people per square mile in all North America only behind Manhatten!
We did it no other way... from the time he was 10 weeks old and he just didn't learn any other way. It was natural.
By contrast when he died my next dog 'CASPER with a C' was a rescue who'd spent 2 years on a farm and I knew HE could never ever be off leash in the city.
It seemed natural. I trusted my dog. And it just always worked for KASPER.
Kindest regards.
Gary
