My Yorkie decided to walk off. I didn't know she was out, and as i started the lawn mower she just left. The GSD waits for me to finish cutting the grass, and then two hours later I realize the Yorkie is missing. Now, I check my surveillance cameras and can see her leaving, heading north two hours ago. Great ;-(
OK, I get the GSD ready, tell him to find her. Since I have no harness, and it happened 2 hours ago, I go on a bicycle and let him go. He is almost faster, than I can handle on the bike, as he stops in a driveway and circles a hotdog whining. I am getting mad, because he is sniffing hotdogs on the side of the road, and not looking for the Yorkie. Then he takes off down the road and is just running around in my opinion. (Later I found out, that people tried to lure the Yorkie with that hotdog, and put her in their car, and took her home).
Long story short; Do I believe a dog can track another dog through town? Yes, I do.

Just curious... What about bloodhounds raises a flag for you?
Some make extraordinary claims of scenting abilities and when you question them their first rebuttal is "But it's a BLOODHOUND!".
Gotcha.
LOL. I know some Mal people that are exactly the same way. And ten there's the BC crowd...
Ian: IMHO, a good bloodhound would not disappoint you if you put one on a hot track. Or even a warm one. Don't let the lazy appearance fool you. They have a VERY strong drive for trailing scents, and are physiolocally adapted to discriminate scents better than other breeds, even other hounds. They also can scale any wall and escape from any uncovered enclosure.

And some Bloodhounds (dogs more so than bitches, typically, working lines...) can be quite Dom/Aggro with a decent degree of Fight Drive into the bargain -- All of those Wrinkly Jowls and L-O-N-G foldy Ear Leathers help to concentrate & funnel SCENT up to that Wide OPEN Nose

I'm surprised that folks doubt the ability of bloodhounds to perform as advertised. Just as groundwork is natural for a terrier and herding comes naturally to a BC, the bloodhound was selected for discerning scents and trailing because it had the goods. It has been selectively bred for centuries to excel, from its disproportionate legs, large feet, and gangly build (for trailing over rough terrain) to its deep, extra wide nostrils (for channeling scent to the olfactory) and its large, floppy ears (which not only protect its inner ears in heavy brush but help to waft air across its snout when its head is lowered).
They have never been considered suitable as pets and are not intended to be a social breed. Most handlers intentionally isolate them.
FWIW, the link above pertains to sport. I am not experienced with that, but I have seen bloodhounds do real work.

I think the blood hound image has become a comedy routine due to some of the fantastical claims made by blood hound owners, I have heard some amazing stories, of blood hounds - of course they could all be true.
it is not the dogs/breed, it is the looney tunes claims and stories spread by the dog/breeds owners.
but then again, all the tall stories could be true....

Good point, Peter. I thought the same about terriers until I saw one go into the ground and come out with a possum twice his size.
ETA: I'll admit that I didn't think as highly of BCs as their owners do, until I realized that the two smartest dogs on Youtube were both BCs!

I am equally embarrassed by the GSD crowd, they are out there in the claims they make about the breed you would think that their breed walks out of the MIT theoretical physics department to have a break from preon theory to cross the road on it's way to the a meeting to solve the middle east crisis and to end third world poverty while handing over the combined aids + ebola vaccine they just discovered all while walking old ladies thru bad neighbourhoods, so I guess it is just a pure-bred dog owner thing to construct your own universe based on you personal confirmation bias.
