The black 'Malinois' is 6, the one that disengaged was 5. So, both should be seasoned dogs. That black dog looks pretty German Shepherd-y.
Age does not equal seasoned. I know of a few police dogs who never got a live apprehension in the dogs whole career so the age of the dog shouldn't matter. Experience is everything even if you did everything right in training.

I don't know firsthand what happened. Only saw the video. Can't speak for the dog who disengaged. However, many people seem to think that the second dog was weak because the guy fought him. I know of perps that take multple gunshots and continue to resist. Apprehending a perp with a dog doesn't mean you cut the dog loose and it brings the guy back gift-wrapped. IT'S A FIGHT!
This is so true. I've had a number of bad guys fight my dog....they also had to fight ME. That's what a team is about. When I say fight I don't mean trying to push or peel the dog off, that's human nature. You aggressively lay hands on my dog and you're going to have a bad day.

LOVE IT -- I'm not an LEO or a Military K9 Handler by any stretch of the imagination, but that's also what "Mother Bear Reaction" is all about too ... This morning at Zero DARK Thirty my leashed Doberman spay and I accidentally surprized a whole family of Raccoons while on our AM walk, and the BIG Daddy MALE bluffed a charge at Adobe when she LIT-UP on them, and my First Instinct was to get right in there with her IF he ended up Actually Engaging my dog "tooth & claw" (but thankfully, the Alpha 'Coon thought better of it, so those Masked Bandits ambled off instead) !!!

Or the realization that his dog didn't have the salt to stay in the fight smacked him in the face right there and then. Some handlers think their dogs are invincible and and infallible. Only in a real situation do they become honest with themselves about how tough their dogs really are. I've had mine kicked, punched and stabbed and they all stayed in it. Even had one break an ankle and still fight. Yes, he probably recalled him because he knew right away the dog wouldn't finish the job and likely would have been injured worse. Again...don't know their SOPs but in that case I would have been all over that guy like a cheap suit and as a team we would of taken care of business. If protocol was to recall then he did what he was supposed to do. Personally, I would think that handlers protecting the POTUS would have more lenient rules but I don't know for sure so I could be talking out of my arse.

It seems a perfect job for dogs. Quiet and no guns blazing and they brought the guy down. And the guy is alive and can be questioned.

dog performance here seems a either a red-herring or a secondary issue.
how does some random opportunist get to penetrate that deep into the grounds of the potus home grounds to start with????
how far would a committed, trained guy strapped to the eye balls would have got?

LOL... A committed, trained guy who was UNARMED got all the way to the East Wing. I guess it's a good thing he left his weapons in his car.
IMHO, the reason these clowns aren't engaged with more force is that any use of force in this country is run lengthways, sideways, and all up and down through the media. Personally, I would think that once I'm on the grounds, I'm a bullseye. But, noooo...
Look at this incident. The Secret Service captures this guy, is fairly transparent about the incident (in the sixties, you may never have even heard about this), and they still get raked because people are questioning the performance of the dogs. And the dogs were just one of the tools available
ETA: People are questioning how good the black dog was. He took a beating and stayed in the fight. That says something to me.

for a country that can factually boast the most high tech, best equipped, best trained and most powerful military ever assembled in human existence I don't get how this can even happen.
as a favour to the US, a country I admire and am grateful for, here is the deal;
for a plane ticket (incluing a stop over in Hawaii) for me and my dogs and a mere $10 US per hour I will provide a written guarantee that no unarmed individual or small group will breach the perimeter of the white-house for the duration of my employment.
