Ideal for the high prey dog simply because the dog will do anything to get that high value reward.
Both my GSDs have excellent prey.
The difference is the older dog has a great off on switch and is my serious "thinking" dog. Been that way since he was 6-7 months old. He'll be 11 next month.
The other has trouble "thinking". He can be a frickin clown at times even at 7 yr old.
I would call one a "thinking" dog and the other a reactive dog.
The reactive dog has a hard time controlling his excitement.
The older dog just gets it when I teach him something new. He can learn just about anything in very few tries.
The younger dog is absolutely as intelligent as the older one yet he has to be worked slowly and calmly or he gets over the top excited.
They aren't related but both are W German working lines over Czech working lines.
Different looks, different personalities, temperaments, etc.
the Czech/WG seems to bring a lot in the right combo.
seems to me tho that the Czech guys are adding the WG and not the other way around so much.
makes it hard to market pure old style Czech dogs when they got a big fat WG stamp all over them, I swear some people do not even look at the peds they buy just for the ped's sake.
apparently my dog's grandsire is a mal cross with the mal part not mentioned in the ped.
Ed would know this dog (gransire, not mine) and prolly know the story of him, would love to get the scoop from somebody in the biz. so long ago now I don't think anyone would get to butt-hurt about it.
Just my observations... I'm no expert and my observations may be interpreted differently by someone with more experience.
LE and MWD service has changed over the last thirty years. Prior to that, there was a lot of demand for single-purpose dogs, and there were a lot of wive's tales that governed how to train a single purpose dog. One example would be not letting an attack dog socialize with humans. Another would be putting no "out" or other obedience on a catch dog. Dogs were trained in compulsion and defense, and the LE community had no qualms about canines being considered "vicious". This is still very evident in training programs such as the Israeli canine programs.
The move to training-in-prey is starting to creep into LE canine programs. The military has made a wholesale move in that direction, and LE is slowly moving that way. IMHO, canine handlers are starting to put more value on a well-balanced dog who will perform on command. I believe that liability concerns will force the entire LE community to revisit how their dogs represent them.
