As some others here have already said, I really hope you will study Ed Frawley's DVD on "Remote Collar Training for Pets" very thoroughly B-4 ever beginning any e-training with your dog
Also, please be aware that many dogs who are e-collar "virgins" will automatically rush to their Owner's Side as their SAFE-PLACE upon first receiving a remote correction -- So if you nick / stim your dog from afar for breaking a Down (or whatever) his default reaction might be running back to YOU
I definitely don't want to start Aries over in escape training. I love his personality and willingness to learn, and I don't want to lose the trust I have with him.
I was surprised to read the statement about communication vs correction being 2 different ways to use a collar. I didn't realize they were terms for distinct training methods. When I said communication tool I was thinking about it being a correction associated with the word nope. I assumed how to get him to understand the meaning of the collar before using it toward my goals would be covered in the DVD.
I'm really glad I asked here first! It makes sense that he shouldn't receive a correction for being confused. I knew that, yet somehow didn't comprehend it fully because I wouldn't be asking him to perform a function that he doesn't know in many places and under many distractions. Thanks for that!
I don't think you were accusing me, but I would also like to clarify that I have no intention of taking the easy way out. I honestly just thought it would be the smart approach and wanted to check to make sure first.
I am not planning on entering Aries into any competitions or anything that would put pressure on either of us to hurry and be perfect. I am just a stay at home mom that finds training and bonding with my dog a highly stress relieving and satisfying hobby! :-) ...one that I hope to become excellent at! Putting in the time to do it right is the reason for me to do it at all.
You were absolutely right in not taking that personally. The information being shared in your thread also applies to many users visiting the sight, and advice is intended for them as much as it is for the OP.
Good looking out. Your dog will benefit from having a handler who does the homework and is prepared.
