I would have loved to have had your dog the day that I decided to use my wallet as an article at the end of the track and my dog didn't feel like tracking! Took me 20 minutes to find it. I sucked at remembering where my track was and the fields at the school had been laid for tracks so many times that I went down several false tracks to find my own. Really tall grass as well.

In fact, Candi, the same thing happens with Socks. She is interested in everything we do and also what the other dogs do. Unfortunately this can also have a very negative aspect. Socks is an absolutely inaggressive Pit towards humans and other dogs. But when her sister (Slippie) attacked my Lab-Mix and another time my adopted stray, Socks immediately took part, which I did not expect from such a peaceful animal. It was very difficult to tear them apart with the help of my husband and the Lab~Mix was badly hurt. Since then we never leave them together loose in the garden, because this can happen in a blink of an eye even when we are present and supervising.

Cathy, I hope you found finally your wallet. Obviously your dog was not in the right mood for tracking and preferred to take a cosy day.

Speaking of finding thing.
One night at Schutzhund training I lost my car keys in the 2 acre, ankle high grass next to the training field.
I looked for them almost a half hour. When I returned to the club field one of the club members said. "Doesn't Thunder do article search?"
DUUUUH!!!
I turned him loose with a "find" command.
He started quartering the field and in a matter of 30-40 seconds he was standing in the middle of the field, patting the ground over my keys and barking at me.
I don't think I'll ever live that down.

So sorry that happened to your poor Lab -- Yes, always keeping them Separated now is RIGHT ... Unfortunately, once a BAD fight like that happens, its chances of repeating are Very high

The difference between males and female dogs fighting can make a difference in how this may go in the long run.
Males fight for dominance, food, territory and sex.
Once they decide who gets what hey want it can often be over.
Females that fight seem to hold a grudge and it may last a lifetime.
Not a joke or a dumb sexist remark. It's fact!

Thanks, Candi it was really awful and I would never risk again to leave them all together. For about half a year I used to have them loose in the yard, all four, during the night, completely unsupervised (!!!) and never happened something like that. Since then I separated them

Do you really think, Bob, that only males fight for dominance?
With Slippie I've got the impression, that she is dominant and fights for this. Of course I'm not a professional and cannot really jugde this. But observing her behaviour I cannot get rid of this impression.
Attacks or trials to attack always happened, when she was jealous or envious, (bones, toys, fruits fallen from a tree (far enough for each dog) or my petting one of the other dogs.
Although she is not in the least interested in toys, it is highly probable that she will want to have it, just because the otherone has it. Each could have a bone, but she would claim the bone of the other one. And if the other one wouldn't leave it to her, we would have immediately a horrible fight. She seems to have the idea, that everything belongs to her. this not a sign of dominance?
That´s why we don't give any toys, bones etc., unless each one is chained or soon later on in the kennel. Slippie triggered a deep fear in me, that something even more terrible could take place some day, if I didn't keep the others separated from her.
Except her sister. In the evening they always begin to chace one another like mad. But it is a game, and after half an hour it is over without incident since almost four years. But of course then they don´t chase each other because of an object.
