Here we can see how humans underestimated dogs (and other animals).
We have in German a swearword meaning "stupid dog" (dummer Hund) even used today from some people, who want to insult another person. I don't know whether you use the same in English too. It mirrors the attitude lots of people had towards dogs.
So good that nowadays scientists finally are exploring the dog's brain.
Accidentally I started two weeks ago to teach my dogs the words of toys. One of them differenciates now 3.(octopus, plate and monkey) But she still needs the help of my eyes squinting to the correct one. I wonder if we will live long enough until she knows 1000! Lol!

Without doubt! I too have never believed in stupid dogs. But I didn't know thhey were able to think so independently, figuring out their own solutions.
The swearword "stupid dog" people use against other people shows that a whole culture had once such prejudices.
