Oh yes, in Switzerland I have seen them frequently, but I guess it wss a language problem, because we use only the word hydrant. Because of the word "fire" I thought it must be something awful! In Brazil I've never seen one. but I'm sure the dogs would use it consistently like a tree trunk.

Yes, I can understand your confusion, then. If you are used to just calling it a "hydrant," knowing that to be something that dispenses water, and then we add the word "fire" before it, I can see how it could conjure up a very frightening picture in your mind!

We always called them fire plugs. Don't know why other then that's where the FD "plugged" in the hoses.
Anything stuck in the ground that sticks up will serve the purpose.
I think the fire hydrant idea was probably re enforced by cartoons.
I have one at the street in my side yard and it seems everyone with a dog passes it up and then lets their dogs pee on my hosta plants. Those are a good 10ft from the curb, into my side yard under a Yellow Poplar tree..

Okay, I am new to posting, so I hope I am not interjecting my sense of humor too early...but I cannot resist. Bob, maybe you should get them started on the fire hydrant so they don't kill the hostas? ; )

Wow, you're new,Christina, but you've rapidly understood he's a wise guy!!!
Bob, I feel so sorry about you're hosta plants. People can be awfully negligent and impertinent! You should keep standing there, stuck like a fire plug, so the plants will be spared.

Never!
They used to mark over my JRT while he was still going.
By the same token the evil little bassid had no hesitation of walking UNDER the two GSds to mark over them even if THEY were still going.
Evil, sick little bassid!
He got hosed down a lot.
