I guess I've finally arrived! I get to suffer the wrath of the almighty VC. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Seriously, how does watching for a counter reconcile with the grip development? As I understand, during the grip development, when the pup releases I take the article away a little. But what if he's just countering? Couldn;t pulling away then be counterproductive? If you don't know, I don't have a pup right now, so forgive me if this is something that will be obvious when I start working him. I'm using videos, bulletin boards, etc. to feed my dog jones till the little Yogi-meister gets here and I need something to worry about to occupy my brain. I'd also appreciate some more input on whether I should even teach a counter. All advice appreciated.

Yes....get re bites as a puppy as instructed in video. This teaches a pup alot of things including to try to obtain a full grip to win.
Later in training you want to be careful when the dog wins and when he made the counter. I have seen dogs that have had just this and not taught a full calm grip wins...not a rebite. The picture you then could have is a dog constantly rebiting on the sleeve because this is the only way he was taught to win the fight....and if he is stressed a little or is a little nervy this will amplify as well.....hence he is chewy on the sleeve.
As a pup going through bite development and building the drive....do what the tape says....it is needed.
i think that the video seems to teach the dog to rebite (a type of counter) if they have a shallow bite on the prey item, this is desireable, if the dog has a full deep calm bite on the item, do not let him win when he rebites, thus the pup is forced to understand, hey when i bite this item hard as hell and dont let go and keep pressure, and turn my head and go into the helper(agitator), then i win the item, but if i get a shallow bite and rebite to a fuller mouth bite, then i also win, the dog will begin to bite full first off instead of starting with a shallow bite.
