My aunt who is a vet has only has 14 dogs (in 15 years) come in with salmonella or E.coli infection. Incidently, all 14 were kibble fed and half had some contributing factor (immune deficiency, intestinal perforation by foreign body).
Becuase of the construct of the dog digestive tract (shorter and thicker walled than humans) there is less opportunity for bacteria to take hold and over grow.
I would also think that if one was feeding raw and a dog was to contract E. Coli or Salmonella, you and / or your whole family would have it too. As Kela states the digestive tract is very short in dogs and raw food gets digested much faster than kibble.
Handling of raw food for dogs is no different than handling of raw food prior to cooking for us humans. Wash, wash, wash....
I ran across a pup that had problems silimar to your and ended up having pancreatic insufficiency, where here pancreas was not making enough natural enzymes to digest her food. It took awhile for the vet to diagnose because the symptoms were pretty general, but the treatment was simple. Some vitamins, special diet and a supplement of "Pancreazyme", a brand of Rx powdered digestive enzyme was added to her food everyday. The pup was immediatly began gaining weight she had lost and doing much better. She was going to need the pancreazyme everyday for the rest of her life though. $?

I just switched to EVO and my 1 1/2 yo GSD coat is soft and shiny. The most amazing thing though is when I bathed him,no shedding! If you have owned GSD you know how they shed. I attribute this to the food. I was hesistant to feed due to the high protein and fat, but after researching the meat vs grain I understand more.Any feedback would be appreciated.
I have had GSD for 30 year. I now have 2 Jetta a 7 year old, long hair and Rocky 1 1/2 male.
