Great info! I know on the vet show Dr. Pol, whom I love watching, always does bloodwork for dogs before surgery.
Thank goodness Tinkerbell is okay!
Things can go wrong so fast, even with younger pups, always good to have a great team on that dogs side during surgery!
Thanks Connie for your highly instructive advices and thanks to all of you so much for sharing your experiences. It's all very valuable for me too. My dogs are all between 6 and 7 yrs. They have no health issues yet, but one never knows, things can happen rapidly and then it is good to be prepared. I'll copy this whole thread and save it.
Does anyone know the average age of Pits and Lab? I've read it's between 12 and 14 yrs, but don't know if this is really correct. For Charlie I can't find out, as no one knows what and how many breeds are hidden in him.

Very grateful for all the input. My Dane is not showing any signs of having trouble chewing although
the epulis is sizeable (maybe a cm.) His food is sloppy so as not to irritate.
I found these posts very reassuring since I think part of my problem is the guilt that I might not be doing the best for the dog. (The other thing I didn't mention is the huge difficulty getting him to the vet since his back end is getting weak and, at 175 lbs., he outweighs me by quite a lot and I can't get him into the car on my own.)
I work as an RN in a major hosp. O.R.--it never occurred to me that an anesthetic could be given without an IV (if they're going to give IV propofol and other drugs, why wouldn't they establish an IV initially?) It was interesting to read that this doesn't always happen. My daughter works in a spay and neuter clinic. I must ask her what their procedures are....
I certainly feel better for the support of panel members and somewhat less guilty. Thanks.
