I contacted one of the OB/Rally/Agility clubs that's relatively close and received a response right away inviting me to come and view a class. I'm looking forward to checking that out after the holiday.
Headed back to Petco tomorrow to see what kind of reaction Greta has... hoping that goes well regardless of the class.
Mona, you make an excellent suggestion and I do indeed have several Leerburg training videos that have been a huge help to us. The reason I want to join a class is that I want to practice things she already knows around other dogs and people. I also want to have someone with more experience watch me and tell me what I'm doing wrong. I know one of my shortcomings is to let things slide sometimes... not good for dog training! It also won't hurt to have someone to report to.
Sounds like you have a good plan -- or two or three! Keep us posted on how things go.
I own a number of LB training videos, too. I consider them a valuable asset in my training toolbox, and I learn something new each time I re-watch them.
I have also taken countless private and group classes. I feel there is tremendous value in having an experienced handler/trainer observe me as I'm working with my dog(s), pointing out mistakes I might not even be aware I'm making. Plus, an added benefit of group classes is the opportunity to desensitize my dog to the presence of other dogs and people, which I feel is important, whether one plans to eventually compete with their dog or simply enjoy a walk at the local park.
