Then came the Constitution of the United States, with the Bill of Rights with the first 10 Amendments, and then over the years Amendments 11 through 27
One might easily assert the rebellion continues through the living Constitution.
I have often thought that the rights enumerated in the First Amendment were intentionally protected, initially, by the provisions of the Second Amendment.
Many of the founding fathers were leery of the power of government to oppress the people. They were conditioned by the their recent histories.

Thanks a lot to you all for you explications. I'll inform myself more exactly too, it seems to be a very interesting history.
Well, in fact under those cicumstances you should celebrate 3 days.
Trust me, Christina, people in the US celebrate for many days before and after the 4th of July holiday, especially when it falls in the middle of the week like it did this year!
Wonderful! When in Switzerland a holiday was on Tuesday or Friday, we always used one day of our normal holydays in order to prolong our weekend. This was easy for me as teacher, as I had 13 weeks of holydays per year!
