Ok, just to clarify. When I got him, he wouldn't do stairs at all. He had no experience whatsoever with them. He was 15 months old at that time. That was the end of April. He sleeps in his crate in my son's room (which is upstairs). He had to learn quickly that to get to his crate, which is his security he has to go upstairs. I dragged him up and it only took 3 times 'til he bounded up himself. Coming down was the same thing, I held his collar and took him down in a controlled manner many times. He does that wonderfully now. He is in the same boat with new stairs where ever we go.
He needs much more experience with stairs. I have no doubt.
Now once he does them a few times, he will do them on his own, when called. My problem is not going down, this is controlled. My problem with him, is if it is more than 4 stairs, he gears up and bounds up them. I don't know if it is fear or lack of experience or a mixture? Even on the prong collar and leash, he does 2 steps gears for the next two. There is no smooth transition between the steps. The other things are coming along great, I don't want to wash him out because of stairs. I am going to try to continue with the prong collar and add food to it. If I do a "watch me" with the food and get his mind off it, perhaps that will help. The food was a good suggestion thank you Vince.
Phyllis: while i'm certainly no profesional i started reading this and it sounds like he just needs to learn to slow down when going up stairs. I would try a small piece of food or treat on each step and show it to him if he is food motivated he would i think stop on each step to get the food. This may slow him down and show him he can go up one step at a time. I know with mine he would walk thru fire for a treat. Don't know what the others think but i supose its worth a shot. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Hi Tamar, It's funny. I tried just that.
He is highly food motivated, but not when it comes to balance I guess? Anyhow, he looked at and grabbed the food at the lower steps, bounded up, and came down slowly and comfortably eating all the way.
What I'm going to try is a mixture of the watch me with food, and the stairs with food on them. I will do both, but not together, and keep him on the prong and controlled and see how that goes.
