Well here my .02 cents. The military considers K-9's as equipment. This gives them the leway to use as they see fit.
I too am against using them in a positive self destructive manner.
It's the dog handler's who become attached to them, as it should be. Only problem is that the military do not want anyone getting attached to their equipment.
A dog's life to most is a precious thing, but a human's so much more.
Sorry Todd, the way I read it it seemed that way,the inference of doing it yourself so to speak but I stand corrected.
At least we both agree on the moral issue of not using dogs in this way and to cap it all it did not work anyway.

Yes the military did think of them as equipment. But to my knowledge, I could be wrong, they have changed their policy. After Nam when so many K9s were left behind there came a big push. Then with the war dog movement and all. I must admit I am not as close as I used to be, but I believe alot of the attitude has changed.
I don't think anyone is arguing about the value of human life. I think they can find better ways.
Also, Paul after rereading what I wrote, I was responding to too many things at one time. Someone mentioned Israel was a small country, I was implying so is Palestine. Not what the suicide bombers are doing.
Todd, its good that you brought up the subject of the military changing their attitude to their dogs, the US DoD are now trying to rehome their dogs, sadly in the UK they will not and any dog that is retired or an overseas posting ends is destroyed, they say it is impossible to rehome or bring dogs back to UK,the truth is it is not cost effective.Sad old world we live in but US public opinion seems to have more effect the it does in UK.

“At the end of the Vietnam War, orders came to leave the dogs behind, to face an uncertain fate in the hands of the Vietnamese, probably as food. For Mike Cagle and other veteran handlers, memories of evacuating via jeep or helicopter while straining for one last glimpse of these canine comrades is almost more than they can bear. "We ate together, slept together, and survived together," Cagle says of his beloved scout dog Heidi. No one will ever convince him that she was a soulless throwaway weapon. “This was taken form this site. http://www.workingdogs.com/doc0125.htm
If you bother going to the Israel special forces web site. You will find that the Israelis have such great respect for their service dogs that they made a canine cemetery in their honor. I think your judgments are premature.

Sorry I don't need to go to their site to decide if I think strapping explosives on a dog is right or wrong. So they have a cemetary that makes it ok, since they 'honor' the dogs?
because they are WAR DOGS means they aren't living creatures???
Am I the only one who noticed the sarcastic tone of 'you wonderful breeders'?
I don't have a problem with culling puppies for various reasons. Have I ever done it NO. Will I ever do it, NO. Is culling puppies different then strapping explosives, in my opinion, YES!
