Doug you also have my deepest sympathies. I put my first dog to sleep 25 years ago and it was the hardest experience I ever had in my life. I guess in that respect I am a lucky. guy. I still think of Nappy on a regular basis.. There is one thing that haunts me to this day. I held my best friend in my arms when they put him to sleep and I left crying. That was my mistake. I had no closure. I deserted my faithful and loyal friend. I was happy to read that you will spread her ashes. To this day I wished I had that closure.
Doug, my thoughts are with you and your faithful companion. What you are doing is one of the most unselfish favors that can be done for her.
Remember all the great times you both shared.
Our training coach/friend e-mailed me tonight saying he lost a young pup today, my deepest sympathy for his loss.
I had to put down my 11 1/2 year old GSD in June. Trust me, time heals all wounds. It will get easier, never perfect, but easier. I think the advice to get another dog is very true. I got another GSD in December. She won't replace Scruffy, but you will love him/her as much, in a different way and it does ease the pain. Hang in there.
I agree with getting another dog. I too had to put my male GSD down last October. Since have gotten a female, she doesn't replace him but sure fills a void.
When my Lab/Sheperd mix had to go, due to lymphosarcoma, I swore I would not get another dog. That was the day before Thanksgiving (November). By the following January, we had another dog; just couldn't take the empty space in the house that was left.
Doug,
You have my deepest sympathy. I lost my beloved Eiko right at 1 year ago. One year ago tomorrow, to be exact. I have since gotten another GSD, a distant relative of his. She is wonderful in her own right, but we (my sons and I) still miss the old boy. It does get better...time helps. I wish you well.
My most sincere thanks to all of you who offered comfort and kindness, and words of advice. It has been two weeks since her passing. I sure miss my sweet girl. I want a new schnauser puppy but living alone and working ten hour shifts 4 nights a week make me hold off for now...any advice about my situation? Thanks again, Doug
Since you work nights, have you considered volunteering at a rescue or shelter? Many of them welcome people to come in a play with or start obedience training dogs. There is one on a GSD site that has a blind dog that they are going to keep and several people show up several times a week to walk him. Just a thought on how to get your "doggie fix" without leaving a pet alone all day. Or "baby-sit" someones dog during the day?
