The thalidomide was just a illustration of what can happen when drugs have unknown side efffects, disasters like thalidomide would be a lot more common if it wasnt for animal testing.
I'd also like to point out that something as simple as chocolate affects humans and dogs differently......the substance Theobromine, to be more specific.
If Theobromine were a drug being tested on dogs, then the deaths of those dogs would indicate that the substance would be dangerous to humans, if we follow your logic. But it's not, at least not in the small amounts that it takes to kill a dog. What if Theobromine were the cure for cancer, and we never knew it because of the assumption that it would affect humans the same way? You could even reverse the situation, and the point would be the same......
If males and females in one species (humans) are so different, how do they figure testing a 20lb Beagle with a cold medicine will make it ok for a 240lb male human?
I think there should be more rules and regulations on - how long you can pursue a certain study. Certain ethics you must follow for the health and safety of the animals. limits on which areas you can explore (fatal diseases before a runny nose). etc.
What about aspirin? How could animal testing of aspirin have possibly told us that giving aspirin to kids 12 and under who have the flu could result in Reyes Syndrome? Unfortunately, it had to actually happen to enough kids for people to realize.
I just don't think that animal testing is the end-all and be-all of determining the safety and efficacy of drugs for humans.....but I do think that there are some diseases that are so serious and devastating, that what other options do we have???? I just don't think it's neccessary for *everything*.
They do use experimental drugs on terminally ill patients all the time.....
