Never mind Robert we all started with GSDs before we got real dogs

The reverse of that is true also. I started with Rotts in SchH in the 1980's and my coach finally convinced me that my scores would be better with a GSD. It's proved true but I still miss the utter adoration that a Rottie lavishes on his owner.
I guess my GSD likes me...my Mal puppy just sees me as a large mobile chew toy.

Will,I have to agree that the rott will never match a GSD when it comes to scoring points but they will work well if you pick the right ones and the Mal will work even better but not all handlers can cope with a good mal.

There is a Mal at our ScH club.. While it is a nice dog and all, I'm glad I'm not handling it. It behaves very erratically and seems to have the attention span of a knat. It is fairly new to the sport, so, maybe it just needs to get focussed.
I know how good these dogs can be, so, this just strikes me as odd for this breed.

Steve,
When I started looking into getting Buttercup as a new work dog, someone told me that I'd totally have to change the way that I handled canines - and that was pretty insightful. Just going from a GSD to a Mal ( I still work both, of course ) has been a nice furthering of my dog education.
Every breed has some handling quirks and if we're going to help other people train, there's no substitute for hands on experience.
However, there is no power on earth that will ever lead me to handling a Bouv or a Dobie. never, never, never

Oh. . .darnit, I'm soooooo sorry. I didn't mean to have anyone find my comments distastefull or un-helpfull. . .WOW???
If I knew that as many people as you found my humor in poor taste. . .well. . .I don't know. . .I guess I would. . .

If you can't put up with a little bit of good natured rubbing then don't read my posts. . .and certainly don't make your own silly comments about them. Yer just beggin' for it when you do that.
If you really honestly have any problem with my Moderating on this board, and you really think it is bias, here is where you can reach the complaint department.

To be honest, this is the first Mal I have seen worked at our club, so I wasn't sure how it was supposed to behave under normal circumstances. If this is normal, then, like I said, at this point in my dog handling days, I know I'm not ready for it!
The owner of our club has a ScH1 Dobie as one of his dogs... Good Lord, how he got his as good as he is must have taken a LOT of patience. But he IS a great dog now.
Is there an "ignore" button I can use for VanCamp?

Ahhh, Vancamp will grow on you, eventually. Of course, I guess the same can be said about house mold....
Besides, he's working under a terrible strain daily - he has the full litter sister to my crazed GSD, so he too is being nearly eaten on a daily basis.
