I have a jeep and husband has the van... Yeah, I had a Safari for awhile, also w/rear a/c, took the rear seats out, of course. The Expedition fits about the same amount of stuff, tho. It's more practical where we live since we're in the hi desert and get some pretty wild weather, including snow up here on our sand roads.

Do the patriotic thing and save gas!
I solved the problem of transporting two GSDs with a Toyota Matrix. The back seat and the passenger seat both fold flat and you can get two good-sized crates in there. 30 mpg city, 35 on the highway if you can drive a stick (28/33 otherwise).

I use a Mazda MPV minivan for transporting my GSD. Good mileage, lots of room, decent acceleration, and very, very safe, as I found out when I totalled my first one--both my dog and I walked away from the accident (he was in a Varikennel).
It will only hold one Varikennel (if you still want to have room for 3-4 people), but will hold two of the metal kennels made by Kustom Krate.

Pete,
What size crates does your Matrix hold and how are they configured?
Thanks,

- way better handling than almost any SUV or P/U truck
- better acceleration than almost any SUV or P/U truck
- smoother, quieter ride than almost any SUV or P/U truck
- 25 mpg average
It's a VW Passat V6 wagon. That's our "schutzhund car". We got it with front wheel drive, and yes, it goes "off road" to tracking fields. We've never gotten stuck, but it comes with an AWD option, if you need it.
Currently, we've got a 550 crate and a 300 crate in it.

Laura,
That is also what we are looking at, but with 2-3 dogs now, the Dodge Caravan is the dog car.
I can also fit a 500 and 2 400's in my jeep (94): but, have to take out spare and the back seats down. Do not miss the gas prices in CA - as the jeep is 4 wheel drive (fulltime) and V8.
Next car is when the next large vehicle dies...considering the engine went out on the Jeep 1 week after the Nationals...

Toyota Tundra Extended Cab V-8 Pick Up! With a cab , you can fit two 500 crates side by side with a ton of room for your gear in back. I also can either let my main dog sleep on the rear seat while I drive, or keep my helper gear there. The rear sit folds down easily and is a good place to keep a long gun in easy reach.
You get a great V-8 engine, decent gas mileage, and Toyota reliability. My current first choice for a large dog vehicle. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Heather--
One is 24" high and one is 26" high. I would have to measure the other dimensions for you. I put the larger one laterally (accessible via the side door) and the smaller one lengthwise, accessible via the tailgate. It is also possible to configure two crates--or two large crates and one small one--by folding the front seat flat and arranging both crates lengthwise. If you need more info, let me know. BTW this car is very reasonably priced, especially for a Toyota--I got mine for under $17K.
