Definitely not a cheap dollar store prong. If the prongs aren't laying completely flat, and sometimes they move around if the dog is acting up, the prongs can pop out. I've only had it happen if they weren't laying quite right at the time I had to give a correction. It doesn't happen often, but it has happened once to me and once to my husband.
I've had my prong collar pop open...I don't think it's all that uncommon...also...sometimes they don't fit correctly because you need a heavier guage for your dog/pup ... that happened to me about 2 months ago, and I was switched to a heavier gauge prong in training class and that solved many of my problems.
Thanks a lot for all of you!
I am going to purchase a heavyer-gauge first, and try to fit them nice and snugg, making sure the links are not loose. Let's see what happens...
Actually, the prong collar I have is indeed very thin metal. I could easily pop the links off with little power at all. Must've been for toy breed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
You should also have a regular collar on with it. Or, you can tie a piece of nylon cord around the dog's neck through the inner ring on the prong collar. That way it doesn't get in the way at all and you have a little protection.
Please excuse my ignorance! I see two rings on the prong collar. The inner ring you want me to attach the nylon cord....is this the ring that I attach the leash onto?
same prob here. also wondered if there were cheaper ones that tended to do this.
you may notice that the collar may come loose on the same prong location all the time. what you can do and really pry the thing out wide, it will be harder for you to take it on and off him though.
My prong collar came with a safety cord that you attach to the eyelet just in case the prong comes loose. I also bought a new collar today called the Good Dog Collar. Its made by Triple Crown Dog Training School. It works like a prong collar but it made of a high strength polymer. On the outside it looks like a watchband. I put it to the test today just to see how it would do because I wasnt sure about the strength of it and was concerned that it might come apart. I wrapped it around a tree and walked around the tree giving it quick hard pops. It worked great. Didnt come apart at all. I took my boxers to a pet store that was having a rescue promotion and noone even noticed the collar. I'll keep you informed on how it holds up.
I have been having a problem of the prong links coming apart when I put the collar away, so I have to put it back together before each use. I am wondering if the collar is going to end up falling apart on the dog soon?
