The collar will not train the dog. You have to apply the proper techniques to train the dog not to forge. If the dog is "straining" against the choker to the point of choking is an indicator that you are not using any technique. The dog can strain against a prong collar too, wich takes me back to my original point that the collar wont train the dog by its self. The technique used with a prong can be used with a a choker or flat collar. If you use proper technique with your choker you may not even need a prong.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
Put the prong on the hard gsd Butch. I am not a fan of the gentle correction club. Like Ed says "I'd rather have one strong correction than a thousand nagging ones".
Let the dog surge forward into the prong and just before the slack goes give a little pop backward start small and work your way up to a stronger one until he gets the idea. Also if your trying to get an ob. heel this is not the time for that yet. Just get him to back off the leash and you won't damage his drive.. Good luck..
WHEN I SEE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL, I'D BE WILLING TO DIE PROTECTING IT.
