Good thing you read that Will, I was half with it and only read half of her post! I think that would have been interesting to see a dog use the UD articles on a track.
Thank you Will for your clear description of the use of the scent articles as well as which organizations use them. Thank you also Deanna for your help. I told you I was new to this and I appreciate any and all information. I have been reading and watching videos that are connected with schutzhund training (most of them Leerburg's) and I had never heard of this type of scent test.

C'mon Will, Fetz would be a huge hit in an AKC show ring! That poor judge may never examine another dog again!

Will,
You should take some video and post it somewhere so everyone can enjoy "America's Most Extreme"
SchH dumbells ARE allowed in AKC providing they fit the dogs mouth. In AKC the dumbell must be of wood or plastic and the bite bar must fit the size of the dogs mouth.
I used one last saterday in a AKC event.

Hehe...Ron, you taught me something!
I literally never thought to use a SchH dumbell in Open ( I've got like 15 AKC dumbells in various states of repair that I use for trials and such ). I have used the SchH dumbell in practice at AKC Ob clubs, but folks just stare at ya funny. Oddly, most AKC Ob clubs that I've belonged to have had at least one judge in them, and the judges never commented that the SchH dumbell was legal to use - I just always assumed that it wasn't.
I'm going to have to try that when my GSD gets into the Open competition.
Okay... so now I can use the SchH1 dumbbell?? I'm just gonna have to bring it with me and ask a judge to make sure. People are probably giving you weird looks at just the SchH1 size, imagine the stares you'd get if you brought the 4 pounder in!

I used to use spoons and leather key cases for my utility articles. Before the 90's I never had a problem using them (they are or were perfectly "legal"). After the 90's, I had judge after judge either look it up in the rule book or fuss with me over my non-standard articles.
When I complained to my trainer (Ruth Rosbach), she said, "Why give them a chance to get bent about anything and look for a reason to nick points?" She felt that anything "unusual" that inconvienienced a judge to the point they looked something up and "broke the flow" just let you in for them looking at the rest of your performance more critically.
As cheap as "regular" akc-style dumbbells are, I'd just use one and let the judge keep going with the flow.
