To further illustrate the part of finding a nice breeder and getting a pup that will fit you and your needs, I got a male from the same litter that Deanna mentioned.
But I didn't get the "pick" pup that she would have chosen for herself or for the nice trainer that got him. I wanted the dog for different purposes and I need a pup with a certain type of temperament. I'm perfectly happy with him, to me he was the "pick" pup from the litter and I had first choice, so it depends on what you want. I was able to communicate what I wanted, the breeder was able to communicate the traits of the pups and I got a good match.
The importance of having some type of relationship with, and trust of, the breeder is paramount for me. I only buy dogs from people who have a good idea of what I'm like and I know enough about them to be sure that they can honestly communicate the traits of their dogs to me.
Even if getting to know someone is a lot of communication over the phone or web, it can help your situation a lot. No pup is going to have everything you want, or at least that pup is extremely rare, so you have to get a real good idea about what you really need and what you are willing to sacrafice to get it.
You'll be able to find plenty of breeders who will be happy as hell to get a nice working quality pup into a dedicated working home. Working homes are harder to find that working bred pups.
I think Leerburg is a good place to start, I don't doubt that Alan can help you find a nice dog, and I know Deanna there is good to work with and puts a lot of work into her puppers.
I know a few of the people that have littermates to my GSD Thunder. We all feel that we got the pick of the litter. The pick of the litter is the dog that is best suited to your needs.
