My question is if the dog is certified narcotics as well as aggression/protection, why is the dog not working? Where did the dog originate? Did you get the dog from a police department, a breeder, a stranger....etc?
Maybe the dog was certified in a controlled environment but once on the street these traits of shyness and hesitency developed. I also am curious like D. Frost as to why you got a certified PSD....
I am working towards certification with my dog, but it is for future work, not just a family dog......what was it that made you decide this particular dog......was it the certification, and if so why....?
Wow..lots of questions <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> And I have answers..
Don- He is now staying in the room with everyone here and just keeping an eye on what's happening. I now have five kids(all teenagers and young adults plus my four year old)in the house for the holidays and he has finally settled down. He's playing ball with several of them and they are feeding him. He still follows me if I leave the room.
David and Drew- I had been looking for a PPD for quite some time. Talked to lots of people who had them for sale. I had it narrowed down to two. One would have had to be flown in from the Czech Republic and I just didn't feel right about getting a PPD that I had never even seen. A very good friend recommended a trainer who had this dog for sale. The dog was certified for police work and never went to a police department after his certification. My friend knows that I have a zero tolerance policy about any kind of drugs in my home and I have a 16 year old who seems to think that he needs to dabble in that. So....his narcotics detection ability was a big plus for me. Please don't tell me that I am a horrible parent for getting a drug dog to narc out my son. I didn't get him for that reason...it was just an added benefit. He is a Czech import and was trained there and then in Philadelphia. So, that's the story about why this particular dog. I drove from Austin to Kansas and spent three days with him and was impressed enough to bring him home. He is everything I had hoped for with the exception of the leeriness of my other family members. He's onnly been here for a week and a half and I think he'll be fine after a little more time. The trainer did tell me that when things get hectic or chaotic in the house, he would go to his crate and get away from it all and that he does.
Van Camp Robert- No offense taken......takes a lot more than that to ruffle me!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Thanks for all your replies and questions,
Marsha Rountree
I can see why after he was "trained" he never went to a law enforcement agency. The trainer sold you a dog that NO LE agency would buy.
I bought a GSD from a trainer about 6 months ago, she was 14 mos old, the tape he sent me - the dog was very good. We ship the dog 1400 miles - dog was afraid to come out of the vari-kennel. 7 days later she was still shy of everything and everybody but me. Won't even take a sleeve for me nor anybody else.
Luckily, I was dealing with an honest vendor - he returned my money. He had no use for the dog after that, so I found a home for the dog as a family pet --------- the dog is still very shy of different places and people.
I should have also stated - as far as commands and the family. I have my retired police service dog living at home. She is my wife's home defense system, when I am not home. The dog will obey my wife as quick as she will me, if I am not around. If I am there, the dog will obey my wife on basic obedience command, as far as the protection side, the dog will wait to get a OK from me first, then will totally obey the wife.
