Here's a thought. My cat is a mess because she refuses raw food at her advanced age. Dry, itchy, skin, screwed-up teeth...the TOTALLY preventable stuff which won't kill her, but still makes life less pleasant than it could be. If I could start over with her, I'd do it the right way. I suggest you do the same. Hind-sight's a real bitch. It really sucks to see an animal needlessly suffer just because one decides to cut corners for the sake of convenience....YOUR convenience, not the animal's.
Remember, it's not just about appropriate nutritient distribution. It's about dental hygiene, and jaw exercise too. No kibble is gonna take the place of bones.
How hard is it to have a cooler full of chicken wings on the road? My question implies it's own answer.

Yes, there are circumstances where barf is not going to be possible.. and you just listed one, but consider doing MOSTLY barf and using a high grade kibble for times that you can't feed raw.
If not any of the foods listed on ed's page should be fine. As I stated before Wellness is good and the kibble is small and doesn't take up much space. Innova is good. I am not crazy about FLint River Ranch, but the whole dog journal gave it high marks...
No one says you HAVE to feed barf, but I can tell you from my own dogs they are MUCH healthier. And, after I figured out where to get bulk human grade meat, it is CHEAPER than any of the kibbles I have mentioned.

Here's an interesting anti-barf article for those looking for additional info. on the barf diet.

When camping, dry ice in a cooler goes a long way. Of course, the best way is feed your dog obnoxious beer-swilling campers.

I don't know that this is the next best thing to barf, but I recently switched my dog to Innova. Within two weeks I noticed that his coat was shinier and silkier, his poops were smaller, firmer and less frequent, and he didn't smell as "doggy" as he used to.

I feed a 1/2 kibble 1/2 barf diet. Was using Nutro until a month or so ago when I stumbled upon Royal Canin Holistic Select Formula @ Petco. It does have Brewers Yeast in it which is a problem for some dogs...I think one of my own included. For her I've been using Dick Van Patten's Duck and Potato also purchased at Petco...not PetsMart. Both foods have human grade ingredients including many fruits, vegetables and herbs. I've been happy w/ them both so far.

The raw diet is certainly the best diet out there and I won't argue with that but some of us ,including myself, just do not have the space to store all that frozen food. My freezer won't even store food for me let alone 40 lbs of chicken backs and 30 lbs of leg quarters. This thread is about the next best thing to the raw diet and frankly I'm getting a little tired of people accusing others who use kibble of being cruel and animals suffering.
And before anyone says buy a chest freezer they are not expensive you can send me the money to buy one and I'll be more than happy to put my dogs on raw.
I use Royal Canin Natural Blend and both my dogs do fine on it.

I agree with Karmen. I also get fed up with people insinuating that unless you feed barf, you are cruel or something. I respect anyone who feeds a barf diet, it probably IS the best way to go, although I think the jury is still way out on it overall. That's a discussion for another day. The original question was what is the next best thing. Stick to the foods mentioned, Innova, Solid Gold, Wellness, ect. Stay away from the grocery store, mass produced, over advertized Purina's of the world. This is when you get into the REAL crap.
