I use rubber mats in my runs and I like them except that it is true that they get very, very hot.It is important if you use them that you would only have them in sheltered runs.As respects to cleaning I cannot really comment as my dogs don't spend a large amount of time in them but they hose down nice and dry quickly and they never get slippery. We also use them in the wask racks in the barn.I would go with the thicker ones though, they stay put together better. Now if you have destructive dogs they are a no,no.I once looked after a dog that demolished three interlocked mats in 1 1/2 hours.
I've been using stall mats in my kennels for some time now. I'd recommend the 1/2" thick ones (still pretty heavy). Some of the dogs will chew on them but they're as durable as any type of mat I could find. The ones I have are 4'x 6' and cut easily with a utility knife. I have them in their dog house, in front of their house and on their platform. The rest of the kennels floor is painted with epoxy. Guess I'm lucky but they all lie on the mats and do their thing on the concrete. I occasionally spray a little bleach/water under the mats to keep bacteria away, just make sure it doesn't get on the dogs pads.
One addition: Before I got the mats I thought about coating the entire kennel with that truck bed liner, the rubberized one, not the harder drying version like Line-X. Three years ago I couldn't find the DIY type at the hardware stores and the professionally installed stuff was too expensive. If anyone else ever tried this I'd like to know how it went. Just another option....
I looked at putting something similar on our kennel floors, off the top of my head I cant remember the name of it but, I have a friend of mine who does this for a living. It works very well, is slip resistant and cleans nice, the only draw back Ive seen so far is the length of time to apply and cure before you can even walk on the surface. I think it was nearly a week before he could use the area he did in his garage, another concern would be spray or vapors in an area where your dogs are housed close to this new floor. I would recommend it if it is a new kennel or you can house your dogs elsewhere for a week or so.I'll let you know if I have it installed in our kennel and how it performs.
I use the big thick (3/4") horse stall mats 4'x6' in my outside kennel because I don't like my dogs having to stand on concrete all day. The only drawback other than excessive heat when the sun is beating down of them is that they get very stinky! You have to clean the tops with a sanitizer and then flop them over and do the other side as well or you get a funky odor in your kennel.
