Problem is, collars can be lost, or discarded, and tattoos can fade and be illegible. Has happened to me when checking rescues.

My pup 16 weeks old and I plan to get him "chipped" soon. I am also contemplating a tattoo but wonder if there is an age limit to due possible ear cartilidge damage or something like that. One ear is floppy right now from teething anyway but I don't want to do any permanent damage.
My vet wont chip anymore till the dog is at least 6 months old. He said the skin it to loose and they might travel. One of my hunt terriers has a chip down in his shoulder now and when I asked someone to read his once, she couldn't find it. I didn't tell her at first that it slipped and most will just run the wand over the back and shoulders of the dog. If the chip travels, you might be out of luck. Have your vet scan it every time you go in.
What type Chip do any of you recommend??
Getting ready to do DNA and have Chip inserted.
And yes her ear is tattooed, but with hair you have to look for it.
