I don't think you can see a dog's importance until you see how much they are represented in a pedigree when you are seeing them and their offspring repeatedly in the 4,5,6th generations.
Popularity may provide a load of breedings and it will take a few generations to weed out the ones that looked good and were well marketed vs. the ones that produced the producers. It is not uncommon for a popular stud to effect a breed negatively for generations.
I know one that alot of people like to argue about is Fero.
People like to throw out the names Troll and the like. Well Fero had 1181 progeny. So what about the balance of them.
I do have a dog that is 3-5 on Fero. Am actually very pleased with him. But...is that because of the mix I got? Dunno...Much discussion on Fero on here...do a search.

Personally Fero is way ove represented out there. His contributions to working lines end at big grips. The environmental issues that are seen frequently in the lines are simply the result of narrow breeding concerns. OK enough of my soap box.
