Deanna some how I would believe this, I have seen you get after people on this forum-you definately are the ALPHA . I just have to remember that just cause it is posted in a topic I started doesn't necessarly mean it is directed toward me sorry ( you can't see it now but my tail is between my legs, and I am submissively wetting ) Sorry is that too visual
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. -Josh Billings
I know what's it like to find out that after spending time training and the dog bonding with the owners that your GSD has bad hips. (only one)
My 8 year old male was neutered at 2 yrs old. Did I have to get him fixed, YES! Darn sure hadn't planned on it. Both parents were working police K-9's. Both his parents had good hips. Kinda takes the wind out of your sail when you find out.
So many things you want to do, then have to do what's best for the dog.
Let's hope my female that was prelimed Good will stay that way when 2 yrs old.
The local SAR unit commander is extrememly interested in the thought of having a K9 unit for his team. He is going to make some calls, get some thoughts of past and present team members, as well as contact some of the elite teams in the SLC region for their thoughts. He will be getting back to me in the next day or so. He did state there is currently no SAR K9 team in Southern Utah. He feels it would be a tremendous opportunity, but understands it would also take some work, so he is going to get the best advice he can and we'll see what direction that leads us! He hinted that he personally might be interested in working the dog, or having me do it, if everything could work out. I suppose time will tell.
I was just reading the police dog/ service dog tests and I would have to say my dog would most definetly pass almost all of the tests if not all. He has been exposed to gunfire, my brother used to take him to the outdoor gun range with him. He said he was just fine. Hoping I would be able to adopt out this dog if he passes the test in real life. Thank you.
regarding your dog, do you have anyone in your area that is qualified to conduct such a test? Anyone could give a basic test, but not just anyone knows what to look for in the dog. It takes someone who is experienced to truly evaluate whether a dog is capable to do PSD work. You might ask around, and see what others have to say. I would suggest you start a new thread and get as much advice as you can. A PSD is a serious thing, and if a dog does not have just the right combination of drives, it is likely the dog will not reach it's full potential, or even worse, become a liability. I can ask around for you, but until I know for sure what an evaluation says......it's all up in the air. In Dee Dee's case, it is a little easier to find a potential job, because there is not agression work involved. Any time there is aggression work involved, many things have to be considered. From your PM it sounds like the dog would be a better candidate as a dual purpose dog (which includes aggression work). Start a new thread and I'll be in touch. Dee Dee, still waiting.
