I agree with Catherine and Rob. If a dog is truly bred to work and loves the job, then it does NOT need any props to "bribe" it to do it's job!
Josh (New England K-9) says that he only trains and works PSDs. Yet in his website, he states that he trains for civilians also. "We offer advanced off-lead obedience classes, as well as competitive AKC obedience through the UD level."
Did anyone else notice this descrepency? And what kind of "motivators" does he use in his training program? Does this include e-collars?
Lou as usual you have laid things out in a clear way and my only comment is that if you are afraid or the dog is nervous of you lying down, there is a lack of both respect and understanding between dog and handler.
I also agree with Josh that the decoy is often sufficient reward as the dog feels it has completed its task.
I don't know what ax you have to grind Kelly, but I'm sure it will be dealt with. I DO only train Police Dogs. I have OTHER trainers who train all my civilain dogs. She happens to be a cookie, clicker trainer! Perhaps you should focus on what you know instead of picking a fight w/ someone you know NOTHING about!
Also Kelly,
Thank you for all the free advertising for my website. We have never had a problem drawing folks to it, but as you so like to quote it, perhaps you might like a job in marketing? It might be the only job you are suited to as you have yet to show ANYONE what you have done in the dog world...
Josh whilst you have other trainers to train the civilian dogs am I not right in saying that there is not a lot of difference between the standard of your PPD and PD.
At the end of the day its the final result that counts and not the talk about what should be done by those who have no knowledge of working such dogs or where they work.
Yes you will get bad PDs but you get more bad pet dogs and PPDs trained by so called "experts"
Have you ever had one of your dogs bite anyone unless instructed to,I have never had it but I also train my dogs properly to do the job intended
Hi Paul,
For what it's worth I only train one perhaps 2 PPD per year. All are held to the same standars as my PSDs. I run full criminal background check on all who want it done. I also test the dogs for the same abilities as a PSD. I will not train a dog who does not have the natural ability to do the work. I also do a full home inspection and require the dog have complete on-leash and off leash CORRECT obedience before training. Needless to say...I don't have many clients for it. The few I do have had REAL (stalking, ect.) reasons for having such dogs. And no, not one has ever bitten w/out command unless the handler was under physical attack.
I cant help but notice that Kelly George is very keen to attack Josh Lewis for what he says,I am interested,do you know him and do you have experience of training police dogs as some of us do and I should point out that Josh is one of the most respected PD trainers in the states so think before you make silly comments on a subject you have no knowledge of,it does not help anyone if a list becomes a place were the only subject is how bad the other people are, such comments usually come from those who know nothing about training dogs.
How come you dont let us know your site
RDC wrote regarding pack animals, the dog still retains a total pack instinct and if you work several dogs together you will always have a leadership listing.
I work six Rotts and I am the alpha male after that comes the next male and the next etc.etc.
At times they do challenge each other for the next spot but because of training it does not get nasty but the instinct is still there and should be.
I was not attacking anyone and I am sorry if I gave that impression. I was asking questions about the website. Questions are good as people learn that way!!!
Don't worry, I will get back to you about what I have done in the dog world soon. I am training a dog right now for SAR and will post a website when she is totally ready.
