You might also look up Ruth Rosbach-Chandler and Tony Chandler in Duncannon. Tony and Ruth are great trainers and a lot of fun. Ruth has a class around Lancaster.

I lived in a high crime city ( Atlanta for almost ten years )and I know exactly what your concerns are ( except for the gun part, I still carry concealed even now ) and I say this with all sincerity :
If you think that you might need to have your dog protect you, wander over to the Personal Protection Dog Training threads and have a look at what many of us have written about the subject. There have been oddles of discussions on a person who has voiced your very concerns.

I do think you are being unrealistic to expect a great SAR dog and also a great personal protection dog too. I know how much work it takes to have a really good SAR dog and I'm sure equally as much for protection training. I really don't feel that the two make for a good combination. I am in LE and also do SAR as a volunteer so I know what it takes to train a dog and what to expect. Good luck and I hope you can come up with alternatives for your personal protection.
