Lauren,Now how did you guess I smoke cigarettes lol Lighten up abit.I know exactly what you are implying about my "Future" breeding program..again let me stress FUTURE.Of course police departments want german dogs for "patrol-work"...and other work. I have had three visits from the head of the local K-9 unit so far.He was quite impressed.I am pleased that out of the 3 test litters a couple of years ago..one is being certified as a drug track dog and the other will have his CDX along with being nationally certified as a cadaveur track dog.The rest of the pups were mainly sold on limited registration. The dam was an american showline bitch (heidelberg) who was ate up with prey drive. The sire ( I rescued)..did not posess the hardness needed..and had a weak temperment.Pedigrees are nice but they are only good if the dog represents them well. You are correct that any dog can have a CD.It really doesn't matter to me if someone won't purchase any "Future" pups because the dam/sire is not titled.I would of course extensively title each of my dogs if I financially could.Even in doing so..there isn't a guarantee that I would sell to an individual who wanted to pay the price.Yes, my kennel name is not valuable and no one would want to steal it or use it.(Rainhaus). There are too many people now that want german shepherds and have no idea what they getting into..especially if they want European lines. The American shepherd is quite a different breed. If they want a german shepherd...they can buy one from a BYB which I am not..or they can go to their local petstore. I hope you have a great day. Candace

ROTFLOL! "drug track dog" Do the drugs get up and walk away by themselves, and you need a dog to go track them down so you can have another smoke? I am having a good time trying to picture this! And even if it were true it still wouldn't prove that your dogs are any better than the ones being killed every day.
Then you admit to breeding mutts. Thanks for the laugh!

lauren - do you suggest that no one can breed until all these rescue dogs are taken? or are these rescue dogs worthless if someone can breed a better dog - is this your philosophy?
And also what experience do you have as a breeder? and what experience do you have with police k9 selection and operation. You give the impression that you must know an awful lot about the subjects, perhaps you could give more information on them to help the posters instead of immediatly criticising and insulting?

i have a fear that in a few years its going to "look" like a bunch of us have mutt dogs. if the organizations and registries don't get their act together the trial results are going to appear to be a long list of well-bred "mixed breeds." and if the registration problems weren't enough, throw the scorebook problems in on top of it. i don't know what the answer is, but i don't think registration or association should dictate which events a dog can participate in.

Real simple Tim. There are a limited # of homes. When a dog is bred, it takes up homes that could have been filled by other dogs. So I think that the dog that is bred should have some significant advantage over the dog that just got killed because of it. I do not consider papers in and of themselves a significant advantage. Maybe I am in the minority here, but I don't give a crap since I do not plan on international competition.
As a breeder, I bred one litter to try to get a pup to show since Auster was going to have to be spayed (pyometra, long story). I made many of the most common mistakes. The difference is that I learned from my experience. Candace has NOT learned that there are better dogs around, so why waste your time creating more mediocre dogs when there are already too many.
Do you want pictures of labs and mutts as detector dogs? It is not enough to define a GSD, since to many breeds can do the task that ARE NOT what the GSD should ever be. The GSD can do it, but they have to be able to do more. Pretty simple. I have met enough labs to know that I don't want one, and any job that a lab can do isn't enough to tell me a dog is a "good" GSD.
The difference between a mediocre and an expectional dog person is that the expectional one will look at what they did, see what went wrong, and change it. They are ALWAYS striving to do better, even if something isn't completely broke. You can tell the difference just from talking with someone about their dogs. It's all about improvement, not sitting back and saying, "Gee, I done good!" That's what I see missing. There are breeders out there that I admire. I don't think they are all bad, just the ones that want less than the absolute best.

They only way that concept works is if you live in a totalitarian society where you can force people to take dogs. By default if there are people willing to pay good money for dogs when there are other dogs available for free, then it is obvious that these two markets are not in competition.

Lauren, have you cracked? You're driving me crazy!!
I don't agree with her breeding ideas (I mean, you have an idea of my opinions by now), and frankly she sounds a little freaking crazy to me too, but Holy Hesus why don't you spare us all the rescue and breeding practice rhetoric.
I'd appreciate the hell outta you if you could chill the -F- out.

Thomas, breeders with crap "papered" dogs only sell because of the public's ignorance. If there were fewer mediocre breeders the shelter wouldn't be full. People just buy crap because they don't know better. Just like getting stuff at Walmart.
I have nothing against GOOD breeders. I appreciate them. I will eventually be getting a dog from a breeder after years of careful observation of their ethics, dogs, goals, and customers. I already have a few in mind that I am trying to watch and hope to meet before I decide.
