David, I feed mainly BARF, but when I travel to shows and trials I feed Iams Lamb & Rice - for some reason, my dogs love it and they have good stools on it.
I hate hauling frozen chicken around, what can I say....
And I'd like to point out that we could all take a point from what David said about different dogs preferring different foods. I let my dogs go hungry when they showed a marked dislike for the Royal Canin, and I was stupidly hard headed about it ( eat it or starve, boys ) - I'll never do that again, I'll give the food away and get them something that they like.
I still feel guilty about that incident to this day.
And Roger, I was talking about the Royal Canin chunks, or whatever their premium food is, not the GSD specific food ( which I think is a bunch of hookey )
Royal Canin was recently purchased by Pedigree. At least thats what the folks from Pedigree said when I was at the German Sieger in August. They said that Royal Canin would still be around as a brand for at least a year. After that they may bring RC into the Pedigree line as their new "High End" food. They didn't make it sound like they were going to mess w/the mixture.
We started feeding our only GSD RC about six months ago. She does well with this food. No weight issues upside or downside. She's a bit of a picky eater, so this is all good as far as we are concerned.
Count me in as another sucked into the myth. My vet thinks it's a load of s**t, but it IS the best kibble I've ever smelled and the dog likes it, so...he's 85 lbs- eats 4 cups a day.
I stopped worrying about if my dogs liked the smell of kibble about the time that I watched them chow down on a hot, steamy pile of brown stuff that had just come out of another dog's butt.
So I'm thinking that maybe what smells good to me doesn't have much to do with my dog's likes and dislikes......

I have to go with the minority...I won't feed rc to my dog. There are certain things that dogs do NOT need in their diets and some popular brands of dog food have these unnecessary things in them. For example- corn (undigestible wheat (possible allergen soy (see wheat and corn by products (the un-meat beet pulp (sugar chemical preservatives like BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin (proven carcinogens.) I'm not saying that Royal Canin has all of these items but it does have at least one and that's one too many for me. There are far far worse foods on the market, but there are also better ones IMHO.
Of course, my dog's breeder feeds his farm dogs some kind of no-name 'nuggets' and those blankety blank animals have consistently lived long healthy lives...so what do I know...
I just don't think there is a whole lot of difference other than some ingredients and advertising hype when you get to the good quality kibbles. (ie those that dont rely on corn and wheat) so whatever works for your dog works.
I tried Roayl Canin on my dogs, they loved it but I notice that in water it would swell up like no dog food I ever tried and they had loose poo.
When I feed kibble (travelling, etc.) mine do well on Nutro Max Natural Lamb and Rice (and I had a dog live to 15 years with little health issues on this food)
Nutro Max Lamb and Rice here for travel also.
With the same train of thought as Will, the dog food companies make their products attractive to the owners. Fido doesnt give a crap if his food is shaped in a dog bone or looks like bacon.
