I have now received the answers, my dog should be adapted to the muzzle as a tool for me to use when needed.
Thanks to all for your input. Sometimes we are so closely connected we fail to see the obvious.

I have two muzzles for my work dog….. a soft cloth Velcro one for the visits to the vet and his heavy leather agitation basket muzzle.
Last time we went to the vet I forgot the cloth one and put the agitation muzzle on him for the exam. I could tell about 2 minutes into the exam he was reaching his tolerance level with all the poking and prodding…… the switch flipped after a blood draw while I was holding him and he smacked me square in the side of the head with the muzzle. It opened up the side of my face like someone cut me with a filet knife.

My sweet and lovable Maggie, who loves everybody, and nose bumps everybody for a hug and treat, didn't like what the vet tech was doing, swung her head around so fast and nailed the tech just above the jugular. didn't break the skin, left a red mark. scared the crap out of everybody. Muzzles are SOP now.
