Thank Guys,
His stool is okay now. But it is the lump I am really worried about. The vet looked at it yesterday but could not tell what it was. He gave four options:
1. to wait for few days and see for any changes.
2. after the wait-
a) antiobiotics
b) niddle biopsy ( which he said does not do much)
c) generalized anethesia and cut out the lump.( as he said that after the niddle biopsy. it may come down to option (c)...so should try (c) first).
TODAY the lump looks funny. I should not all it a lump as it looks more like a boil/ wound on this stomach. But it is under his skin. It is little red today....I have taken another appointment with him tomorrow and if it looks worst, should I ask him to give some bacterial/ fungal medicine or cut it out. I remember reading somewhere that PUPPIES WITH ANTHESIA HAS LONG TERM BAD EFFECT.

Was an umbilical hernia ruled out by your vet?

A biopsy really isn't worth the money unless the dog has an ongoing problem with lumps. You're probably going to want to remove it if you say that it has changed within 24 hrs. Not a real good sign.Could be anything from an abcessed bug bite to a benign or malignant tumor. They might not know until the open it up in surgery.
Does it feel attached to his body from deep under the skin or does it seem easy to pick up off his body and move? Malignants don't usually move)
Does it cause him any pain?(a benign tumor won't but an abcess will)
Does he itch/lick at it? (usually from growth of a malignant tumor or pain from abcess)
If it's an abcess, they will drain and clean it and leave a a small opening for it to continuing to drain as it heals. If it's a tumor, I'd just have it removed to be on the safe side. Who cares what it was, as long as it's gone. If it occurs again, there are plenty of tests you could run then.
Anesthesia won't hurt your pup. Advancements with the gas and machines are safer and more precise today. He might be a little groggy or have an upset stomach when he comes home from the surgery, but will go away within 24hrs. Plus, a lump removal is a very quick, simple procedure that will probably take 15 min. at most.

Pepto-Bismol is NOT poisonous to dogs... it's poisonous to cats. Vets prescribe pepto, pepcid ac and more "human meds" to animals all the time. Knowing these things are a part of owning a dog. What's the point of taking your dog to a vet everytime he sneezes?
Sorry, I thought it was poisonious to dogs too. I didn`t mean take your dog to the vet. Just talk to them once and make a list of what works, what doesn`t, and what`s poisonious.

Rashmi,
From your description the lump sounds like an umbilical hernia. But I really wanted to comment on the pups with anesthesia. I work at the University of Penn Veterinary Hospital and I see young pups (as young as 2 weeks) safely anesthesitized. There are always risks with any animal, but with the very young and very old those risks are greater. A large problem with anesthesia is that it drops the circulating blood pressure. If this happens for a prolonged amount of time the body responds by constricting peripheral blood flow and dilating flow to the heart, lungs and brain. Organs, such as the kidneys (which are extremely important to the longevity of your dog), need ample supply of blood and when flow is restricted damage to the organ results. This damage can take months to years to become apparent (the kidneys can function proficiently with up to 75% of it not working). Now all of this can be avoided with the proper monitoring during anesthesia. If the patient is properly monitored (which doesn't always happen in private practice) drops in BP (blood pressure) can be detected early and we can compensate for the animal (using vasopressors and fluids). If your pup goes under for 15 mins, this is not a big risk (it would take more than 15 mins to damage the kidney). If your really worried about it, ask your vet what kind of monitoring they do under anesthesia. Normal responses include heart and respiration rate, mucus membrane color, pulse rate and quality, EKG, and a Doppler or Dina map (blood pressure monitors). So there are always risks with anesthesia, but precautions can be taken to avoid future problems.

I have a GSD with a finacky stomach - however - when he is ill - loose stools / lack of appetite. I make a mixture of white cooked rice - raw chicken wings or backs and 100% canned pumpkin. I don't remember where I learned this - but it has helped my dog everytime.

You guys are the best. There is so much wealth of knowledge and compassion here. I am truly humbled.
I was following everyone’s advice and a very close monitoring of my pup. I am not sure what it is as it is a combination of what Alison had mentioned.
1. Vet did not know what it is
2. It is under his skin and looked like a marble sticking out of a piece of cloth.
3. It is attached to his skin and I could pick it up from the outer skin and does not move.
4. He does not itch or lick but he does seem to bite his anus/ stomach a lot. To that I found yesterday that he has round worm. He was de-wormed, but my little fellow eats lots of mud and I had given him raw meat. Vet gave first dose. Perhaps this combination caused him round worm also. MAYBE THIS LUMP IS ASSOCIATED WITH WORM???
5. Today the LUMP has a small incision in the middle and looks little loose under his skin and less swollen (little dry). Perhaps it was just a “ABCESS”
WHAT IT COULD BE IF IT DRYES UP?? I saw a little red (perhaps insect bite) bump with a white dot in the middle on his stomach. Why I am having all these trouble with my pup? I feed him right. He goes in my back yard. I don’t let him near any other dogs. Perhaps all the pups go through these things???
Thanks for the tip on ANETHESIA. I will make sure I ask the vet all these questions. I was wondering if possible should I stick with LOCALIZED ANETHISIA INSTEAD OF GENERALIZED ONE? Does localized work better? My pup is very hyper so perhaps LOCALIZED is not a good idea.
Regards,
Rashmi

One other thing the lump could be... when my pup got his rabies shot he later developed a bump on his abdomen that sounds like what you are describing. My vet said this was not internal, just a subcutaneous reaction to the shot causing swelling. This makes sense because in the military we get lots of shots and I have seen soldiers now and then get this on their shoulder. Anyway, the vet prescribed some anti-inflamitories; either these or time and the bump went away. If your dog had shots in the area where the swelling is this may be the cause.
Stupid people shouldn't breed. |
